vision & foundation
A society where activism is celebrated,
sustainable solutions shape daily life,
and people take pride in caring for all living beings.
So how do we get there?
The complexity of today’s global crises is asking for an active response from everyone. As changemakers from different walks of life, we’re geared up for this - we’re in it for progressive, societal transformation. However, we tend to be overly focused on external change…
A Smart Activist understands that it’s essential to look inwards as well. Why?
We have a strong feeling of responsibility - that’s for sure. We’re trying to prevent a worsening, existential crisis. And in that, we deal with resistance and apathy around us, with limited budgets and capacity - working on systemic change is hard!
But what goes on inside us - our thoughts, feeling, biases and assumptions - influences how we respond to these daily challenges. It drives the way we make choices and how we interact with other people. If we we’re unaware of how internal dynamics affect us, it undermines our capacity for handling challenging situations in constructive ways.
And, when we ignore our own needs for too long, it will catch up with us. We may experience constant tiredness, lack of motivation, wanting to leave the sector, difficulties in relationships (work and personal), being overly cynical - and just feeling we are not ourselves anymore.
That is why The Smart Activist’ mission is to support you in becoming effective, and letting go of what is not effective. You can act for change from a place of presence, acceptance, clarity and confidence. While it’s hard to demand respect and celebration from society, we can certainly inspire it. Ready to discover?
Becoming an effective changemaker is a personal journey. But it is part of a global movement - one that acknowledges that today’s complex problems need us to turn inwards as well, transforming the way we relate to ourselves and those around us.
Your powerlessness is your greatest strength
Foundation
Smart Activism is a term I use to convey my vision, but its foundation is not mine to claim. It draws from both ancient wisdom and modern day insights, inspired by countless teachings that encourage self-awareness and emotional maturity, addressing limiting beliefs within you and/or your community, knowing how vital self-care is, and seeking shared humanity rather than adding to polarisation. That to me, is being smart!
Here are some mentors, teachings and teachers that have strongly influenced my philosophy and approach, and to whom I am super grateful!
The Work That Reconnects - Joanna Macy
Narrative Coaching - Dr. David Drake
Deep Democracy - Myrna Lewis & Yonathan Keren
The Leela School - Jared Franks
The R.A.I.N. method / Power of Awareness - Tara Brach
Also used in the programme: The Hero’s Journey by Joseph Campbell, systems thinking, Carl Jung’s archetypes and Shadow Work.
